West Cecil Health Center Recognized for COVID-19 Best Practice with Onsite Telehealth

Onsite telehealth rooms are available at Conowingo and Havre de Grace locations

(Conowingo, Md.) West Cecil Health Center (WCHC) received national recognition for an innovative patient care option that offers onsite telehealth appointments. The new model of care allows patients to participate in telehealth visits in private rooms available at both Conowingo and Havre de Grace locations. National Association of Community Health Centers selected the onsite telehealth model as a national best practice and included the patient care program in a tool kit developed during COVID-19.

Onsite telehealth ensures safe and accessible care for patients regardless of access to Internet service or smart devices. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, WCHC provides affordable healthcare for all residents in Cecil, Harford, and nearby counties in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Telehealth services are available for a wide variety of appointments, including acute care, follow-up, wellness, allergy, medication refills, behavioral health, and more.

“We were concerned that the transition to telehealth services during COVID-19 would create challenges for families with no or limited access to Internet service and smart devices,” comments John Ness, President & CEO. “Our provider and information technology teams collaborated to design a telehealth model that would solve this problem while still maintaining high levels of safety for our patients and staff. We find patients also enjoy the convenience of scheduling an onsite telehealth visit in conjunction with other health center services such as laboratory or pharmacy.”

When patients arrive at Conowingo or Havre de Grace, also known as Beacon Health Center, they are escorted safely into a private room. The medical provider initiates the telehealth visit through remote access, eliminating the patient’s need to interface with equipment to reduce the risk of exposure. WCHC staff members ensure that the telehealth rooms are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before each patient visit.
